Re-Opening Fortress New Zealand : Latest Update

Kia ora everyone,

We might not be Fortress New Zealand for much longer! This week the NZ government announced a conservative, staged border re-opening New Zealand to the world.

If you haven’t caught the announcement yet, here’s where you can find more information – https://covid19.govt.nz/travel/international-travel-and-transit/travel-to-new-zealand/

We’ve been scratching our heads a bit, trying to interpret what this might mean for our summer season and the current bookings we have with international walkers.

At this stage, it looks as though we’re now working towards a date of 30th April 2022.

The general consensus within the NZ tourism industry is that the 30th of April is completely unacceptable and there is some heavy lobbying happening as we speak to have this date reassessed.

When the announcement was given, there was also some suggestion that it could be revisited in the near future, so we’re hesitant to make big changes to your bookings with us until we have some more clarity.

We’ve learned that it isn’t unusual for our government to issue a date, then renege, or bring it forward.

We are already working on a week-to-week basis with our domestic customers, so we wanted to reach out and let you know that while we’re aware of the announcement, we don’t want to upset anyone’s plans just yet, in case things change. If you have a North Island guided walk booked with us between 1st February and 30th April 2022, we’d like to hold fire for a few more weeks yet and see how this develops.

Thank you for your support, tenacity and patience – we’re grateful to have you as a customer and we may shed tears of happiness when we are finally able to have you back, so bring a hanky, it may get messy.

Dates for the 2022/2023 hiking season are available on our website now!
