Accommodation

On the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk we stay in back-country Department of Conservation huts. These huts are basic, but warm and dry and set in spectacular locations. They have communal sleeping bunkrooms, spacious separate dining areas, drinking water on tap, wood-fired heating, pit-style toilets located outside the hut and large verandahs to make the most of the spectacular wilderness locations! There is no electricity or showers provided – dinner by candlelight adds to the special atmosphere.

For a more information on what staying in a DOC hut is like, check out our blog ‘What To Expect From a DOC Hut.’

If staying in a hut isn’t your cup of tea, check out our lodge based option, the Tongariro Hiking Tour.
