YOUR GUIDES

A small team of many talents.

Chef, entertainer, historian, musician, therapist, planner, sherpa… there’s no end to the list of roles our guides play. We’ve gone out of our way to assemble the very best – a small, highly dedicated team of legendary guides, who will ensure your holiday is one you won’t soon forget!

Brad Taylor

Brad is a hiking veteran with over 21 years experience in the North Island outdoors. Originally trained as a whitewater rafting guide, Brad made the switch to trail adventures early and has never looked back. He specialises in the Lake Waikaremoana, Coromandel and Great Barrier Island areas and has hiked the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk over 100 times! He’s quick with story and loves his 80’s pop culture and vintage Star Wars memorabilia.

‘Brad possessed a wonderful combination of experience, humour, knowledge and a fantastic way with people. These few days were really a highlight of my year!’

DEBORAH, Waikaremoana Discovery Tour

‘Brad had us on his own for 4 days. He was friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and yet gave us space and time on our own. We couldn’t fault him. And we learnt a lot about the Coromandel environment in a most interesting way.’

SUE, Coromandel Explorer

‘Brad is very knowledgeable, and he is always willing to share his knowledge about Te Urewera and also about his secret recipes. Thanks Brad!’

SARMILA, Waikaremoana Guided Walk

Karllie Clifton

Karllie is a one-woman hiking machine. Her mission to hike every single trail she can find has taken her into every pocket and remote corner of New Zealand so she can write about it in her travel blog for the rest of us to enjoy from our armchairs. Karllie possesses a calm, unruffled demeanour from years spent chaperoning excited teenagers through her work as a Youth Mentor for Hilary Outdoors Education programmes.

‘A big shout out to our guides Karllie and Mike who were professional, organised, fun and managed to adapt the walks to what the weather was doing. Thanks, team, you were as much of a highlight as the scenery. Hope to walk with you again sometime.’

CAROL, Great Barrier Island Escape

‘We had two great guides, Karllie & Hamish, giving us good history of Great Barrier. Very pleasant to be with and most helpful, really enjoyed their company.’

SUE, Great Barrier Island Escape

‘We did the Great Barrier trip and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The accommodation, catering, hospitality of the hosts, and enthusiasm and helpfullness of our guide, Karllie, together with the fantastic views, swimming and other activities were fantastic. Thank you Walking Legends.’

BOB, Great Barrier Island Escape.

Julian Sietses

You won’t get lost with Julian, not only are his head and shoulders about 3 feet above everyone elses’ you can just follow the orange trail marker tattooed on his calf. They call him the Horopito Hungus and he knows where to get a good éclair in Ohakune. When he’s not leading groups over the Crossing, spinning great yarns, you’ll find him surveying the world from up on Mt. Ruapehu, in the freezing cold, in a tent, happy as a pig in the proverbial.

‘Julian was great we were looked after so well. It was wonderful to have our family in such safe hands in the mountains. Julian is an amazing asset to your business and people would choose to go on walks because he is the guide. Thanks to Julian for his willingness to offer first aid. It was a pleasure to spend time with him.’

JO, Tongariro Hiking Tour

‘Great walks, great weather, great leaders. We particularly enjoyed Julian’s knowledge, cheerfulness and cooking.’

ANDREW, Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk

‘Julian told us heaps about the geology while on our hike and also about Maori culture. He was super friendly and made sure everyone was able to hike at their own pace.’

ANNA, Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk

Andrew Briant

Let me introduce you to the Waikaremoana specialist of our Walking Legends family. This is Andrew. Part-time Gizzy farmer, current trail runner and fan of the Julie Andrews classic “The Sound of Music”. Andrew is most often found out on the Lake Waikaremoana trails and is never one to pass up an opportunity for a dip in the lake. Being a serious trail runner, who eats marathons for breakfast, if you happen to see him shoving a few extra heavy items into his pack early in the morning, don’t worry, he’s just training. Keep up the good work Andrew though we’re still waiting for that rendition of “Do-Re-Mi” on top of the Panekire Bluffs.

‘I wanted to express our satisfaction with Andrew on our recent outing to Lake Waikaremoana. He was gracious, informative, attentive, and helpful during our recent stay in the area. Andrew’s knowledge of the area added greatly to our enjoyment during the past 3 days.’

JAN, Waikaremoana Discovery Tour

‘Nothing but praise for Andrew who was very professional and respectful.’

JIM, Waikaremoana Guided Walk

‘Andrew was great value. Knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating and very helpful. Having the meals cooked was fantastic and the food was really good.’
