The 3-day Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk departs once or twice per month from December through to April.
Shuttle Transport from Rotorua
to Tongariro National Park
We offer a return shuttle transport service between Rotorua and Waimarino (formerly National Park Village). This isn’t included as part of your walk package, it’s an additional extra. We can pick you up from either central Rotorua or central Taupo (including both Rotorua and Taupo airports) on the day before the walk begins and drop you off at your pre-walk accommodation in Tongariro National Park. We can return you back to either central Taupo or central Rotorua (including both airports) at the end of the walk.
Travelling by private vehicle (self-driving)
If you’d like to travel independently and meet us in the Tongariro National Park, we can pick you up from your pre-walk accommodation in Waimarino (formerly National Park Village) on the morning the walk begins. There are options for parking your vehicles in Tongariro National Park while you’re out with us, please get in touch with our team for more information. We can easily drop you back to your car when we finish the walk. If you are self-driving to Tongariro National Park, we’ll let you know where to meet us and at what time and where it’s best to park your vehicles. If you’re taking a different route please check with our reservations team, we can help you find the best solution.
Travelling by train – the Northern Explorer
You can get to Waimarino (formerly National Park Village) using the Northern Explorer train, run by Great Journeys NZ. This is an Auckland to Wellington train service that stops in Waimarino (formerly National Park Village). This service does not run every day, so please check the schedule before you book. There are a number of accommodation providers within walking distance of the train station.
