On this New Zealand Great Walk experience, we’ll stay in two back-country, Department of Conservation huts, Oturere Hut on night one and Waihohonu Hut (pictured left) on night two.

These huts have communal bunkrooms with slab-style timber bunk beds, separate dining areas, drinking water on tap, wood-fire heating, pit-style toilets located outside but close to the hut, and large verandahs to make the most of the spectacular wilderness locations! There is no electricity for charging batteries, so it’s a good idea to bring a battery bank for your mobile phone.  The lack of modern technology and conveniences really adds to the special atmosphere.

If staying in a hut isn’t your cup of tea, check out our lodge based Tongariro Hiking Tour.
